Figure in Blue I | Masonry on paper | 21 × 29.7 cm
A figure emerges through expressive layers of paint, balancing strength with softness. Simplified line and gestural mark-making leave space for the viewer to complete the story, allowing the figure to become both deeply personal and quietly universal.
From my series The Printed Self exploring the relationship between clothing and identity through expressive figurative painting. Inspired by contemporary fashion, textiles and everyday observation, the series considers the ways we present ourselves to the world and the stories we carry beneath the surface. Clothing becomes a visual language; repeated patterns act as markers of memory, personality and belonging, while simplified, anonymous figures invite viewers to recognise something of themselves within the work. Balancing bold line, colour and hand-carved relief printing, each painting reflects on identity not as something fixed, but as something continually shaped by experience, connection and self-expression.
