Title: Figure in Brinjal and Dibber | masonry paint on paper | 57.5 by 76cm
Part of my ongoing series, The Printed Self, this original painting explores the relationship between clothing and identity through expressive line, colour and hand-carved potato printing.
Rather than portraying a specific individual, I create simplified figures that invite viewers to recognise something of themselves within the work. The anonymity of the figure allows the painting to feel both deeply personal and quietly universal, leaving space for individual interpretation and connection.
The repeated pattern becomes more than decoration. It acts as a visual language, echoing the ways memory, experience and self-expression become woven into the identities we present to the world. Set against a rich aubergine background, the figure conveys a quiet sense of confidence and self-possession, occupying her own space with calm assurance.
Balancing bold composition with intuitive mark-making, Figure in Brinjal and Dibber is a contemporary figurative painting that celebrates identity not as something fixed, but as something continually shaped through the stories we carry and the clothes we choose to wear.
